Omnipresence 2

The line art of the Omnipresence comic is finished and the colors are done.

The final comic will be published full color in Rikki-zine that will come out 2.9.2016. The zine will be presented at the Rikki exhibition, where I'll also have two works exhibited.

During work I had problems on deciding what the character would have looked like. First sketches had a girl character but after thinking about it I decided to use a non-binary character, because then the focus would be more on BPD and not the gender. Well at least that's what I had in mind.

first concept sketch of the comic
The colors of the comic were inspired by Matteo DeLongis' work. I have admired his work for a long time. His colors are very soft and dream-like with strong color accents in details. I wanted to try out my own take on the dream like color scheme while adding bright neon-like splashes in crucial spots.
I guess I ended up using the neon colors a bit like a highlighter. In the end the colors became heavy and more like a bad dream, which worked perfect because of the theme of the comic which is BPD.

The final comic will be published in Rikki-zine. It's the first issue. Presented at THIRD SPACE gallery in Helsinki 2.9.2016 (Gallery THIRD SPACE, Tarkk'ampujankatu 18, Helsinki). The exhibition itself will be  open from29.8. to 4.9.2016, so if you're in town at the time, come by and say hi. The book will be found at Helsinki's comic festival 2.–4.9.2016.

Omnipresence 1

Omnipresence is a small series of comics and illustrations that I have mad and have yet to make, that are exploring the mind and it's fragility and strength, It illustrates the development and remedy of an insane mind. It's twistedness and possible slow recovery. This comic will be about Borderline Personality Disorder and the way it manifests itself. The theme is very personal to me so I want to execute it properly.

This particular comic is designed for Rikki-project, which is a zine exploring mental illnesses. Currently the zine will contain works from 25 artists from Finland. It will contain color- and black and white works. The zine will contain everything from comics, to illustrations and photography.

My own work will be a 5 paged comic, full color, which is pretty rare for me, since I never know how to use colors in my comics. I'm excited and scared to try making a comic in color, since I'm not very comfortable with my color schemes... But hopefully I will learn something new in color use during this project.
I'm a bit scared that it will not look exactly like I want it to look like, but I will do my best to get it right.

The Finnish title for the comic is Omnipresence: Hetkiä (which means omnipresence: moments)
I wanted to call the series "Omnipresence" because I think it illustrates perfectly the state of mind of certain mental states. It's like you are in your mind, but at the same time you are looking at yourself from outside. From somewhere else. Particularly in BPD it's like you are observing yourself trough the eyes of others, but not like the others see you for real. More like how YOU THINK they see you. And it's often twisted and completely false way of seeing yourself. And often it triggers paranoia and crushing anxiety.

I will make the comic using pencils, because it's something I haven't done before I really wanted to try out what the comic would look like without ink. The other reason for using pencils is that I can control the lightness and heaviness of the line art better. Pencil gives the possibility to make fog-like textures and smoother movement lines.

The sketches are all done, now there's only character design that's left and then the real work begins.

stupid comics by Broci

I started drawing these little comics when I realized that our school had a confusing map hanging on the wall. It showed that you can be in three places at once. Since then I've started documenting small weird things that happen in my life. Of course most of them contain stories about my cat Kisu (aka. as Lapanen and Kisuli) and his goofing around and being his fabulous self.

I did make small micro zines out of them. They turned out pretty cool. Full color 4-page page-turner zine comes out once a year or so... Around Helsinki's comic festival. I also post most of the comics here: READ THE COMIC HERE

Silver and pearls

About half a year ago I had a chanse to work with Maria Hästbäcka a photographer from Lahti. She needed some help finding clothes for her fashionshoot course, and I was glad to help with my work and styling.

Maria was looking for a glamorous type of fasion shoot with lots of glitter but still sophisticated, so I searched my collection and found some pieces  that I thought would fit the idea perfectly. In the end the style was a bit of a modern take on a gangsters girl from the fifties. As a styling we ended up using Hollywood inspired, but lighter and funkier make-up and hair created by awesome Tom Schevelin from Qhair. Maija from Paparazzi worked as our fabulous model.

Laser fauns

I have finally learned to use the lasering machine in our school.
I have wanted to learn how to operate the laser machine since the day it arrived at our school, but with a tight schedule and lots of projects going on non-stop, I have never gotten the opportunity until this Friday. Finally there was some free time to thoroughly sit down and make something with laser cutter.
